Why It's Difficult

Frame Node Machining Challenges

Frame nodes carry loads from multiple structural members simultaneously. Every interface must be positionally accurate for the assembled frame to be square, rigid, and free of induced stress.

Interface Density
8+ interfaces on one part means 8+ opportunities for positional error to accumulate. All interfaces are machined from a single datum in one 5-axis setup — no accumulation.
Load Path Integrity
Each interface carries a different force and moment. Material distribution between interfaces must maintain structural integrity at every load combination — reviewed in DFM.
🔩
Assembly Compatibility
All mating structural members must assemble without shimming or forcing. Tolerances on all bolt patterns and face positions are chosen to ensure compatibility with standard extrusions, tubes, and brackets.

FAQ

Complex Frame Node Parts — FAQ

Common questions from engineers and procurement teams.

A complex frame node is a structural part where multiple structural members (tubes, extrusions, plates, brackets) converge — transmitting loads between all connected members. Unlike a simple elbow or T-junction, a complex node may have 4–10 interfaces on different planes and angular positions, each requiring precise alignment for the assembled frame to be geometrically accurate.
All interfaces are machined from a single datum in one 5-axis setup — the part is fixtured once, and all faces, bores, and features are machined in that setup using a single coordinate origin. CMM inspection verifies all interfaces against the same origin, reporting positional accuracy between every pair of interfaces.
Standard: ≤ 0.01 mm on all mating faces — sufficient for bolted frame joints where clamping force eliminates any small waviness. For joints requiring zero fretting (precision frames, robot skeletons): ≤ 0.005 mm with an optional lapping step.
Yes — HXC can machine Al 6061-T6 or structural steel frame nodes that are subsequently welded into larger fabricated frames. The node machining is completed before welding; weld-preparation chamfers and joint geometry are machined to specification. Post-weld stress relief and re-machining of critical interfaces is available.
HXC has machined frame nodes with up to 10 interfaces on a single part. Beyond 10, the part typically becomes large enough to justify splitting into two joined nodes — which HXC can machine as a matched pair with verified relative positions.
Al 6061/7075: robot skeletons, automation frames, UAV central nodes — lightweight, anodizable. 42CrMo4 or C45 steel: heavy industrial equipment frames. SUS304: food and cleanroom equipment. Ti Grade 5: aerospace and weight-critical.
Yes — for robot frames and precision equipment, HXC produces matched node sets where all interface positions are verified relative to each other, confirming the assembled frame will be square and accurate without shimming.
Prototype (custom fixturing, high-interface node): 8–12 days. Small batch: 12–18 days. Production: 16–24 days.
