Tin Plating Process Steps

Alkaline and acid tin plating processes are available, each optimised for different substrates and finish requirements.

Pre-Treatment

Alkaline cleaning, acid activation, and electrolytic cleaning to remove oils, oxides, and ensure a receptive substrate surface.

Tin Deposition

MSA or alkaline stannate bath with precise process control for matte, semi-bright, or bright tin deposits as required by specification.

Reflow / Annealing

Optional reflow treatment at 232°C produces a bright, reflowed tin layer that significantly reduces whisker growth risk for high-reliability electronics.

QC & Solderability

XRF thickness, solderability testing per J-STD-003, visual inspection, and whisker evaluation per JEDEC JESD22-A121 on request.

Yes. All our tin plating electrolytes are lead-free and produced without any regulated substances listed under RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU or REACH SVHC. A Declaration of Conformity (DoC) is provided with every order at no extra charge.
Tin whiskers are thin metallic filaments that can grow spontaneously from pure tin deposits, potentially causing electrical shorts in high-density electronics. We mitigate risk by offering matte tin (lower internal stress) and bright tin with reflow annealing (disrupts nucleation sites). Both options are evaluated per JEDEC JESD22-A121 guidelines.
We offer three finish options: matte tin (lower stress, recommended for high-reliability electronics), bright tin (higher gloss, excellent appearance for consumer electronics), and reflowed tin (heated post-plate to produce a bright fused surface with significantly reduced whisker risk).
Yes — tin is one of the most solderable platings available. Our deposits meet J-STD-003 solderability requirements. A minimum of 3–5 μm tin is recommended for reliable soldering. We can provide solderability test certificates with every electronics-grade order.

Barrel plating is used for high-volume small parts (fasteners, terminals) where parts tumble in a perforated barrel — economical but limited to parts tolerant of mechanical contact. Rack plating mounts individual parts on custom fixtures — used for larger, delicate, or tight-tolerance components requiring uniform thickness. We offer both.
