Teflon Coating Application Process

Multi-layer PTFE application with controlled sintering delivers a dense, pinhole-free coating with excellent adhesion and long service life.

01

Grit Blasting & Cleaning

Abrasive grit blasting to Sa 2.5 creates a textured anchor profile. Solvent degreasing removes all surface contamination prior to coating application.

02

Primer Coat Application

Specialised adhesion primer sprayed and flash-dried at 80–100°C. Provides the critical bond between the substrate and the PTFE topcoat system.

03

PTFE Topcoat Layers

One to three PTFE topcoat layers applied by spray and flash-dried sequentially to build target film thickness and eliminate pinholes through the full depth.

04

Sintering & QC

Parts sintered at 370–420°C. PTFE particles fuse into a continuous, dense film. DFT measurement and adhesion testing performed after cooling.

Teflon™ is DuPont/Chemours' brand name for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a fluoropolymer with an exceptionally low coefficient of friction (0.04) and virtually universal chemical resistance. Teflon coating is applied by spray as an aqueous dispersion, flash-dried, then sintered at 370–420°C to fuse the PTFE particles into a continuous, dense, non-stick film.
Yes. We use FDA 21 CFR-compliant PTFE formulations for food contact applications. These are cleared for use on surfaces that contact food in commercial baking, processing, and packaging equipment. Full material declarations and FDA compliance documentation are provided with qualifying orders.
PTFE Teflon coating provides continuous service from -200°C to +260°C. Short-term excursions to 290°C are tolerable. Above 260°C continuous operation, coating degradation begins. For higher temperature applications, PFA coating is recommended as an alternative.
Yes. Aluminium is one of the most common substrates for Teflon coating. The surface is grit-blasted for an anchor profile, then an adhesion primer is applied before the PTFE topcoats. Thin-walled aluminium parts require controlled blast pressure to avoid distortion.
On bakeware and food contact surfaces, lifespan is typically 50,000–100,000 release cycles under normal use. On industrial equipment, service life is much longer. Teflon coatings cannot be repaired in the field — worn coatings require complete stripping and recoating.
Our standard system consists of one primer plus one or two PTFE topcoats, achieving 15–35 μm total DFT. For chemical barrier or high-wear environments, a three-coat system (40–50 μm) is recommended. Thickness is measured and reported on the inspection certificate.
