Insulating Support Component Challenges

Insulating support components must provide mechanical support and electrical isolation simultaneously — a combination of material properties, dimensional accuracy, and assembly protection that requires specialist machining expertise.

Material Matching at Metal-Insulator Interface
The thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) mismatch between metals (Al: 23 µm/m·K, SUS316L: 16 µm/m·K) and PEEK (47 µm/m·K) or ceramics (6–8 µm/m·K) means assembly clearances must be designed for the worst-case temperature. HXC calculates CTE-compensated tolerances for every metal-insulator interface.

Assembly Without Cracking Insulating Material
PEEK and ceramic materials are brittle under point loads. Assembly fixtures, thread forms, and clamping approaches must distribute load uniformly. HXC uses controlled torque specifications, soft-jaw clamping, and dedicated assembly tools to prevent cracking during machining and assembly.

Cleanroom Particle Control
PEEK machining produces fine shavings and dust that must be completely removed before cleanroom use. HXC uses dedicated PEEK-only tools, ultrasonic cleaning, and UV inspection to ensure zero particle contamination from insulating components.

Yes — HXC machines matched metal + PEEK assembly kits where both components are produced and dimensionally verified as a set. CTE-compensated clearances are calculated for the assembly operating temperature range. Assembly compatibility (clearance at room temp and at operating temp) is verified by CMM before shipment.
PEEK machining precautions: (1) Dedicated PEEK-only tooling (no cross-contamination with metal chips); (2) Coolant-free or air-blast only (prevents thermal shock); (3) Soft-jaw fixturing to avoid stress concentrations; (4) Thread torque specifications provided with every threaded PEEK component — exceeding the torque limit cracks the material. For ceramic-adjacent metal seats: we advise on assembly approach during DFM.
PEEK: volume resistivity >10¹³ Ω·cm, operating temperature up to 250°C, cleanroom-compatible. Vespel PI: higher temperature capability (up to 350°C), better dimensional stability. PTFE: excellent chemical resistance and low friction. Boron nitride ceramic: highest thermal stability, but requires machined metal seat for assembly. HXC machines all four.
For semiconductor process equipment: IEC 60664 (insulation coordination), SEMI S2 (safety for semiconductor equipment). Typical requirement for plasma system insulating components: volume resistivity ≥ 10¹⁰ Ω·cm. HXC provides the material datasheet with volume resistivity for every insulating material used. Electrical testing (volume resistivity measurement) is available as an additional service.
PEEK: continuous use to 250°C, short-term to 300°C. Vespel PI: continuous use to 350°C. PTFE: to 260°C. For temperatures above 350°C: boron nitride or alumina ceramic — HXC machines the precision metal seat for these ceramics. Specify the operating temperature and chemical environment and we recommend the optimal insulating material.
Yes — HXC supplies complete insulating assembly kits: metal body + PEEK/PI insulating insert + fasteners (with torque specifications) + assembly instructions. All components are cleaned, matched, and packed as a kit. Assembly torque limit is engraved or printed on PEEK components where required by the customer.
