Machining Challenges

Equipment End-Effector Part Challenges

End-effector parts must combine low mass (for fast motion), precise action geometry (for accurate device placement), and long wear life — in a cleanroom-compatible form.

⚖️
Low Inertia vs Stiffness
The end-effector must be stiff enough to resist deflection under device weight and acceleration forces, yet as light as possible to maximise robot speed. HXC topology-mills all end-effector structural members, achieving 40–55% weight reduction while maintaining required stiffness.
🔁
High-Cycle Wear Life
End-effectors in semiconductor equipment execute 10 million+ pick-and-place cycles annually. Contact surfaces must be wear-resistant — hard-anodized Al or nitrided steel — to prevent dimensional change that would cause misplacement errors over time.
🧼
Cleanroom Particle Generation
Wear particles from end-effector contact surfaces contaminate wafers. HXC specifies hard-anodized Al (HV 400+, no wear particles) or PEEK (no metal particles) contact surfaces, verified by particle count after cleaning.

FAQ

Equipment End-Effector — FAQ

Engineering and procurement questions answered by our semiconductor components team.

HXC uses topology-informed pocket milling: the structural load paths (from the robot wrist to the wafer contact points) are identified, material is retained in these paths, and all non-load-bearing zones are pocketed. Result: 40–55% weight reduction with stiffness loss of only 10–15% vs solid. Deflection at the wafer contact points under maximum payload is calculated and verified by FEA before machining.
Inertia reduction beyond weight minimisation: (1) Concentrate mass near the robot wrist (lower arm inertia) — pocket the distal end more aggressively; (2) Avoid overhanging features that add inertia without adding stiffness; (3) Use PEEK for contact features where Al would be over-engineered. HXC calculates rotational inertia about the robot wrist axis as part of the DFM report.
Al 7075 Type III hard anodized: most common — HV 400+ anodize layer provides excellent wear resistance at contact surfaces. PEEK: for metal-contamination-sensitive applications — no wear particles, good dimensional stability. SUS440C: for contact pins or pads requiring the highest wear resistance. All materials deliver zero detectable particles after cleaning.
Yes — HXC's DFM review includes: load path analysis, deflection calculation at key contact points, minimum wall assessment, inertia calculation, and cycle life estimation. Design changes are recommended before any machining commitment. Most DFM recommendations reduce cost while improving performance.
Standard: ±0.01 mm action geometry. For precision aligner end-effectors: ±0.005 mm achievable with additional semi-finish probing and correction passes. Geometry is verified by CMM measuring all contact positions relative to the robot wrist mount datum.
Yes — HXC machines integrated vacuum manifolds, Ø0.3–3 mm vacuum ports, and O-ring grooves directly into end-effector structures. All vacuum channels are deburred, flow-tested, and verified for leak-free operation before cleanroom packaging.
Prototype: 6–9 days. Batch: 10–16 days. Topology-optimised designs (new FEA required): 8–14 days.
