Common questions about differential housing machining, tolerances, and materials.
HXC machines all differential housing components: differential cases (outer rotating
housing containing spider gears); carrier housings (stationary axle housing holding
differential bearings); side gear cups; ring gear flanges; and
bearing retainers. We machine from billet, from casting, or from customer-supplied
blanks.
Bore diameter: IT5 or IT6 (±0.008–0.015 mm on Ø60–100 mm). Roundness
≤ 0.005 mm. Left-right bore parallelism ≤ 0.010 mm. Centreline to ring gear
plane ≤ 0.020 mm. These control bearing preload, gear meshing pattern, and noise.
GGG50 / 60 ductile iron: standard for passenger cars and commercial vehicles.
Al 380 / A356: lightweight die cast or gravity cast housings. Al 7075
billet: motorsport and high-performance. 42CrMo4 billet: maximum strength for
motorsport and military.
Yes — HXC regularly receives customer-supplied castings and performs precision CNC finishing: boring,
reaming, facing, and drilling to IT5 / IT6 tolerances. This is a common workflow for automotive
Tier 1 / Tier 2 suppliers.
Differential bearings require tight bore tolerances because the bore establishes the bearing outer race
interference fit. Too loose: the race spins (fretting damage). Too tight: excessive radial pre-stress.
IT5 on a Ø80 mm housing gives ±0.008 mm tolerance — achievable by CNC boring and verified by CMM.
Yes — ring gear bolt hole patterns (8–12 holes on Ø120–200 mm pitch circle) are machined to ±0.02 mm
positional tolerance relative to the bearing bore centreline. Ring gear pilot bore is machined to H7 for
accurate ring gear centring before bolting.
Rough bore, semi-finish bore, finish bore to IT5, face milling of bearing seats, drilling and tapping of
all threaded holes, reaming of dowel pin holes, deburring, and CMM final inspection. Surface finish
Ra 0.8 µm on bearing bore faces is standard.
