Four AZ31B wrought magnesium alloy structural parts for UAV/drone, RC aircraft, mounting, and support applications. AZ31B density 1.77 g/cm³ — 33% lighter than Al 6061. The primary argument for magnesium UAV structures: at equal structural stiffness (not equal cross-section), a magnesium part weighs approximately 25% less than aluminium because magnesium's elastic modulus is 45 GPa vs aluminium's 69 GPa — meaning cross-sections must be proportionally larger, but the mass per unit stiffness is still lower due to the density advantage. All parts chromate conversion coated or MAO-anodised immediately after machining. Fire-rated chip handling throughout.

UAV / Drone Body Structural Parts
AZ31B wrought magnesium alloy UAV and drone body structural parts — frame plates, arm attach blocks, central hub bodies, and battery tray structures — for fixed-wing UAV, multi-rotor drones, and hybrid VTOL aircraft. AZ31B density 1.77 g/cm³ vs titanium 4.43 g/cm³ vs steel 7.85 g/cm³ — magnesium is the lightest practical structural metal available. For drone frames where every gram of structural mass reduces payload capacity 1:1, the density advantage of AZ31B over aluminium 6061 (1.77 vs 2.70 g/cm³) directly enables 33% more payload for the same structural mass. CNC milled profile with pocket weight relief in non-load-bearing web areas; wall minimum ≥0.8mm maintained. 5-axis CNC for complex multi-face geometry. MAO (micro-arc oxidation) surface treatment: ceramic TiO₂/MgO layer 10–20μm, significantly better corrosion and wear resistance than chromate conversion for outdoor UAV applications. Or chromate conversion (MIL-M-3171 Type VI) for indoor/commercial UAV applications. ASTM B107 AZ31B material certificate.

Electronics & Device Housings4 Products · MAG-003 to 006Quote →
Four AZ91D / AZ31B magnesium alloy electronic device housing and frame parts — lightweight housings, portable device shells, handheld device frames, and electronics mid-frames. Magnesium provides inherent EMI shielding (electrical conductivity comparable to aluminium) — critical for electronic device housings. Chromate conversion coating (MIL-M-3171 Type VI) is the standard surface treatment for electronic device magnesium housings: it is conductive (maintains EMI continuity), applies at room temperature without dimensional change, and provides adequate corrosion resistance for indoor consumer electronics environments.

Handheld Device Frames & Electronics Mid-Frames
AZ31B handheld device structural frames and AZ91D electronics device mid-frames for industrial handheld terminals, portable medical devices, scientific instruments, and consumer electronics requiring weight-critical structural chassis. Mid-frame and structural frame functions: (1) carries all mechanical loads from screen, battery, and component mounting to the outer housing; (2) provides EMI shielding enclosure for internal electronics; (3) establishes all critical dimensional interfaces (display aperture, connector port positions, button boss locations) that determine device assembly accuracy. CNC milled cavity pocket ±0.05mm for component fit; connector port positions ±0.05mm for cable harness interface; button boss OD h8 for tactile switch actuation. Magnesium EMI shielding: volume resistivity of AZ91D (~1.5×10⁻⁷ Ω·m) comparable to aluminium (~2.8×10⁻⁸ Ω·m) — adequate for EMI enclosure at frequencies up to several GHz when combined with chromate conductive coating. Chromate conversion (MIL-M-3171 Type VI) maintains electrical continuity at housing mating interfaces — critical for EMI gasket effectiveness. Helicoil M2.5/M3 inserts for screw boss features requiring repeated assembly cycles.

Manufacturing Capability

What Magnesium CNC Parts Require
Beyond Standard Aluminium Machining

🔥
Fire-Rated Chip Handling — Mg Ignition Risk
Magnesium chips and fine swarf are combustible — magnesium ribbon burns with a bright white flame that is difficult to extinguish with water (water intensifies magnesium fires by releasing hydrogen). Our magnesium machining cells use dry cutting (no water-based coolant), fire-rated chip collection bins, and CO₂ or dry-sand suppression systems. Mg chips collected in sealed fire-rated containers and disposed of per hazardous material regulations. This is not optional — it is the primary operational requirement that differentiates magnesium machining from aluminium.

🛡
Surface Treatment Within 2 Hours
Freshly machined magnesium surfaces oxidise and begin to corrode within hours in ambient air — surface treatment must be applied within 2 hours of machining. Our production workflow stages chromate conversion or MAO treatment immediately after machining, without staging parts overnight in an uncoated state. Chromate conversion (MIL-M-3171 Type VI): applied at room temperature, zero dimensional change, conductive (EMI), adequate indoor corrosion protection. MAO (micro-arc oxidation): 10–20μm ceramic layer, superior outdoor/UAV corrosion resistance.
2-hr treatment cycleChromate / MAO
🔩
Helicoil Thread Inserts — Required for Mg
Magnesium is softer than aluminium — threads in magnesium strip at lower torque and wear out faster in repeated assembly cycles. Helicoil (coiled stainless wire thread insert) or threaded brass inserts are specified for all magnesium threads requiring repeated fastener engagement: M2.5, M3, M4 screw boss features in device frames. We install Helicoil inserts as part of the machining operation and confirm go/no-go thread gauge on every inserted thread.

Surface Treatments

Essential Finishing for Magnesium Parts

Magnesium requires immediate surface protection after machining — bare magnesium corrodes rapidly in ambient air.

🛡
Chromate (MIL-M-3171 VI)
Standard for electronics housings. Applied at room temperature, zero dimensional change, conductive (maintains EMI shielding), adequate indoor corrosion protection. Clear or yellow-gold colour. Most economical treatment — applied within 2 hours of machining.
ElectronicsEMI conductive
💎
MAO (Micro-Arc Oxidation)
10–20μm ceramic TiO₂/MgO layer. Superior hardness (HV 300–500) and corrosion resistance to chromate — used for UAV parts and outdoor applications. Matte grey appearance. Higher cost than chromate but significantly better outdoor durability.
UAV / outdoor
⬛
Anodise (HAE / Dow 17)
Porous magnesium oxide layer, typically sealed with resin. Better corrosion resistance than chromate, slightly worse than MAO. Used for structural parts where appearance matters. Can be coloured by dye before sealing.
StructuralColour option
🎨
Paint over Chromate
Powder coat or spray paint applied over chromate base coat — for consumer product housings requiring specific colour and texture. Chromate provides adhesion base and corrosion barrier. Paint adds 50–150μm per surface — cavity dimensions must allow for paint thickness at DFM stage.

Our Advantage

Why Engineers Choose Our Magnesium Parts

Fire
Fire-Rated Facility — Mg-Safe
Dedicated magnesium machining cells with dry cutting, fire-rated chip collection, and CO₂ suppression. We never machine magnesium in aluminium or steel machining cells where water-based coolant contamination creates fire and explosion risk.
2hr
2-Hour Treatment Cycle
Surface treatment applied within 2 hours of machining — never staged overnight uncoated. Freshly machined magnesium oxidises rapidly; delayed treatment produces inferior adhesion and corrosion performance of the coating.
EMI
Conductive Chromate — EMI Maintained
Chromate conversion coating specified for all electronic device housings — not anodise or paint which are non-conductive. EMI shielding effectiveness depends on electrical continuity at housing mating interfaces; only conductive coating maintains this.
Heli
Helicoil Inserts Standard for Threads
All magnesium structural threads that require repeated assembly cycles receive Helicoil stainless inserts — not bare magnesium threads that strip after 10–20 assembly cycles. 100% go/no-go inspection on every inserted thread.
Frequently Asked Questions

Magnesium Alloy CNC Parts — Common Questions

AZ31B (wrought, ASTM B107): density 1.77 g/cm³, good machinability, for UAV frames, handheld device frames, brackets, mounting seats, and support structures. AZ91D (die-cast grade, ASTM B94): slightly denser at 1.81 g/cm³, pressure-tight for electronic housings, portable device shells, and mid-frames. Both grades provide inherent EMI shielding comparable to aluminium. Key limitation: magnesium is combustible in fine chip form — dedicated fire-rated machining environment required.
Chromate (MIL-M-3171 VI): standard for electronics housings — conductive (EMI), room temperature, zero dimensional change. MAO (Micro-Arc Oxidation): 10–20μm ceramic layer, superior hardness and outdoor corrosion resistance for UAV. Anodise (HAE/Dow 17): porous oxide, sealed, for structural parts. Paint over chromate: for consumer product colour and texture. Surface treatment must be applied within 2 hours of machining — bare magnesium oxidises rapidly and delayed treatment produces inferior coating adhesion.
Milled pocket: ±0.05mm. OD h7; bore H7. Surface: Ra ≤0.8μm milled. Wall minimum: ≥0.8mm UAV structures; ≥1.0mm housings. Thread: M4 minimum for structural threads; Helicoil inserts standard for repeated assembly. Magnesium machines easily — lower cutting forces than aluminium — but thin walls are more brittle and require custom machining strategies.
MOQ: 1 piece. Lead times: simple parts without surface treatment: 5–7 working days. Chromate: add 2–3 days. MAO/anodise: add 4–6 days. Paint over chromate: add 5–7 days. ASTM B107 (AZ31B) / ASTM B94 (AZ91D) material certificates available.
