Magnesium chips and fine swarf are combustible — magnesium ribbon burns with a bright white flame that is difficult to extinguish with water (water intensifies magnesium fires by releasing hydrogen). Our magnesium machining cells use dry cutting (no water-based coolant), fire-rated chip collection bins, and CO₂ or dry-sand suppression systems. Mg chips collected in sealed fire-rated containers and disposed of per hazardous material regulations. This is not optional — it is the primary operational requirement that differentiates magnesium machining from aluminium.

Surface Treatment Within 2 Hours
Freshly machined magnesium surfaces oxidise and begin to corrode within hours in ambient air — surface treatment must be applied within 2 hours of machining. Our production workflow stages chromate conversion or MAO treatment immediately after machining, without staging parts overnight in an uncoated state. Chromate conversion (MIL-M-3171 Type VI): applied at room temperature, zero dimensional change, conductive (EMI), adequate indoor corrosion protection. MAO (micro-arc oxidation): 10–20μm ceramic layer, superior outdoor/UAV corrosion resistance.

Helicoil Thread Inserts — Required for Mg
Magnesium is softer than aluminium — threads in magnesium strip at lower torque and wear out faster in repeated assembly cycles. Helicoil (coiled stainless wire thread insert) or threaded brass inserts are specified for all magnesium threads requiring repeated fastener engagement: M2.5, M3, M4 screw boss features in device frames. We install Helicoil inserts as part of the machining operation and confirm go/no-go thread gauge on every inserted thread.
