Why It's Difficult

High-Flatness Base Plate Challenges

Achieving ≤ 0.01 mm flatness over 600 mm requires surface grinding after stress relief, temperature-controlled measurement, and compensated clamping — techniques not found in standard CNC machining.

📐
Large-Area Flatness
Flatness error over large plates compounds from: thermal distortion during machining, residual stress release after roughing, and workholding-induced deflection. HXC uses staged roughing → stress relief → precision surface grinding to achieve ≤ 0.01 mm over 800 mm.
Hole Pattern Accuracy
Hole patterns of 50–200 holes must maintain ±0.01 mm positional accuracy over the full plate size. We use CMM probing to verify each hole against the nominal grid before the plate leaves the machine.
⚖️
Parallelism (Top to Bottom)
For plates used as assembly datums, both faces must be parallel within ≤ 0.01 mm. Surface grinding both faces ensures this — standard milling alone cannot achieve this over large areas.

FAQ

High-Flatness Base Plates — FAQ

Common questions from engineers and procurement teams — answered by our manufacturing team.

Standard precision surface-ground base plates: ≤ 0.01 mm over 600 × 400 mm . For CMM reference-grade plates: ≤ 0.005 mm. For gauge-grade optical bench plates: ≤ 0.002 mm (available on request, requires lapping and temperature-stabilised measurement). Flatness is measured at 25+ points by CMM on a surface plate at 20°C ±0.5°C.
Rough milling removes large volumes of material rapidly, creating temperature gradients and releasing residual stress in the billet. Without stress relief, the plate will distort after leaving the machine — often bowing 0.05–0.2 mm. HXC rough-mills, stress-relieves (either natural ageing for 24–48 h or vibratory), then finish-grinds — guaranteeing the flatness is stable.
Standard: ±0.01 mm for hole patterns up to 200 × 200 mm. For larger patterns (up to 600 × 400 mm): ±0.015 mm. For gauge-quality CMM fixture plates: ±0.005 mm. All hole positions are measured by CMM and reported in the full dimensional report.
Al 6061/7075 hard anodized : standard for automation and robot cell bases — lightweight, corrosion-resistant, anodized. Cast iron : excellent vibration damping for machine tool bases. Steel 45 (C45) : for hardened-and-ground precision plates. SUS304 : for food, medical, and corrosion-sensitive environments. Granite composite : for CMM reference-grade plates (available as a separate service).
HXC's surface grinding machines achieve: flatness ≤ 0.005 mm over 500 mm (as-ground, before CMM verification). Combined with temperature-controlled measurement and correction passes, final flatness ≤ 0.003 mm is achievable on smaller plates (≤ 300 × 300 mm). Grinding marks Ra ≤ 0.4 µm on the ground face.
Yes — HXC installs Helicoil or thread inserts (M3–M20) flush with the plate surface as part of the supply. Insert position and thread quality are verified before shipment. This avoids stripped threads in soft aluminium plates after multiple assembly cycles.
Surface grinding envelope: 800 × 600 mm . Precision milling (without grinding): up to 1,200 × 800 mm — flatness ≤ 0.05 mm. For plates requiring flatness ≤ 0.01 mm over areas larger than 800 × 600 mm, precision scraping or lapping is available — please enquire.
Prototype (surface ground): 6–9 days. Small batch (5–20 pcs): 9–14 days. Production: 14–20 days. Gauge-grade plates (≤ 0.003 mm): add 3–5 days for lapping and temperature-stabilised measurement.
