FAQ
Ratchet Pawl Assembly — FAQ
Common questions about ratchet pawl assemblies, materials, and engagement testing.
A ratchet pawl assembly is a matched set — hardened pawl, pivot pin, and return spring —
that produces one-directional locking in a ratchet mechanism. The pawl pivots on the pin, is held against
the ratchet wheel teeth by the spring, and engages or releases depending on the direction of wheel
rotation. Matched sets ensure correct engagement depth, spring preload, and consistent mechanism
performance.
42CrMo4 / C45 hardened steel: industrial hoists and hand tools.
SUS316L stainless: marine and food applications.
Ti Grade 5: aerospace weight savings.
PEEK: surgical instruments, autoclave-compatible.
POM / Nylon: light-duty automation feeders. The pawl driving face must be harder than
the ratchet wheel tooth — typically HRC 55+ pawl engaging HRC 50+ wheel.
Every assembly is cycled 50 times on a functional test fixture verifying: correct
engagement depth (toe contacts tooth face, not tip); smooth release without jamming; correct spring
preload; absence of chatter. Only assemblies passing all 50 cycles are shipped.
Common driving face angles: 75°–85° for positive engagement in hoists and jacks.
45° symmetric for bidirectional ratchet mechanisms. Flat / fine for
hand tool ratchets. Custom angles available — specify on drawing.
Yes — HXC designs matching pawl geometry for any ratchet wheel: hook angle, pawl length, pivot pin
diameter, and spring rate are all calculated from the ratchet wheel module, tooth face angle, and
required holding torque. Provide the ratchet wheel drawing and we calculate the matching pawl as part of
the free DFM review.
Torsion coil spring: most common, fits over the pivot pin, low profile.
Compression coil spring: higher preload for heavy-duty hoists.
Leaf / flat spring: thin profile for instrument ratchets. Spring rate and free length
are calculated to give the correct engagement force at the rated tooth face angle.
Minimum practical assembly: pawl length ~5 mm, M0.5 ratchet wheel, Ø1 mm pivot pin, 0.2 mm spring wire.
Below M0.5, consult our engineers — watchmaking precision required.
Prototype (1–5 sets): 7–10 days. Small batch (50–500 sets): 10–16 days. Production (500+ sets):
12–18 days.
