Nozzle Holder Machining Challenges

A nozzle holder must position the nozzle precisely, seal leak-free against the fluid supply, and survive repeated installation cycles without wear — three requirements that must be met simultaneously.

Nozzle Bore Concentricity
The nozzle mount bore must be concentric with the fluid supply bore to ≤ 0.005 mm — any eccentricity tilts the nozzle and deflects the spray pattern. All bores machined in one setup.

Sealing Face Integrity
The sealing face must be flat to ≤ 0.008 mm and burr-free — any waviness or burr prevents the O-ring from seating uniformly, creating a leak path. Sealing faces are fly-cut in a final dedicated operation.

Retention & Alignment Features
Nozzle holders often include anti-rotation flats, alignment pins, or threaded retention features. All position relationships between retention features and the nozzle bore are verified by CMM.

Nozzle Holder Machining — FAQ

Engineering and procurement questions answered by our team.

All bores (nozzle mount bore, fluid supply bore, and O-ring groove centreline) are machined in a single turning setup without rechucking. The primary bore establishes the rotational datum; all other features reference it. Concentricity ≤ 0.005 mm TIR is verified by CMM measuring the nozzle bore relative to the supply bore centreline.
HXC machines O-ring grooves to AS568 / BS1806 standard geometry for all standard O-ring sizes, or to custom geometry for face seal and Boss-type ports. Critical dimensions: groove width ±0.02 mm, groove depth ±0.02 mm, corner radius per spec. All O-ring groove dimensions are CMM-verified.
Yes — HXC supplies nozzle holder + nozzle matched kits. The nozzle is installed and the assembly is tested for alignment (spray axis concentricity ≤ 0.01 mm) and leak integrity. Assembly kits are bagged individually with a test record.
Flat face seal (metal-to-metal): Ra 0.8 µm, flatness ≤ 0.005 mm. O-ring face seal: Ra 0.8–1.6 µm, flatness ≤ 0.008 mm. For pharmaceutical fill nozzles: Ra 0.4 µm, passivated, no crevices.
Yes — quick-change nozzle holders with bayonet lock, quarter-turn, or cam-lock retention features can be machined. The locking geometry and sealing face are machined in the same setup, ensuring alignment and sealing are maintained through multiple installation cycles. HXC engineers advise on optimal retention geometry during DFM review.
PEEK: for strong acids, alkalis, and solvents — excellent chemical resistance, autoclavable. SUS316L: for moderate chemical service and food/pharma. Hastelloy C276: for the most aggressive chemical environments — available from customer-supplied material. All materials supplied with mill certificates.
Yes — sensor ports (M5, M8 thread + counterbore) for pressure transducers or flow sensors can be machined into the holder body, with all port positions verified by CMM relative to the nozzle bore datum.
