Why It's Difficult

Irregular Block Machining Challenges

Asymmetric profiles have no convenient flat datum — every setup requires custom fixturing. Interface relationships between non-parallel faces must be held through multiple operations.

Non-Standard Profile
No two flat faces are parallel. Custom soft-jaw fixturing is designed per part to provide repeatable datum references for every machining operation.
Multiple Interface Planes
Connecting blocks link two or more mating parts in different planes. All interface positions must be dimensionally consistent — verified by CMM against a unified coordinate system.
Prototype to Production Consistency
First-article profile and interface dimensions are locked into the CMM program. Every subsequent part in the batch is verified against the same program — guaranteeing dimensional consistency from prototype to production.

FAQ

Irregular Connecting Block — FAQ

Common questions from engineers and procurement teams — answered by our manufacturing team.

An irregular connecting block is a structural component with a non-symmetric, non-prismatic profile that connects two or more mating parts across different planes. Unlike a standard bracket or cube, its geometry is driven by the assembly envelope — shaped to clear obstacles, route cables, or provide multiple non-parallel mounting interfaces in the tightest possible space.
We design custom soft-jaw or tombstone fixtures from the part's CAD model before machining begins. The fixture is measured on the CMM to verify it provides the correct datum references. All functional faces are then machined in as few setups as possible — typically 1–2 — to minimise datum transfer error.
Interface (mating) face dimensions: ±0.01 mm. Profile tolerance on non-functional irregular surfaces: ±0.05 mm. Hole position on any face: ±0.01 mm. For precision instrument connecting blocks: ±0.005 mm on critical mating interfaces — discuss requirements with our engineers.
Yes — a dimensioned sketch (PDF or scanned drawing) with key interface dimensions, material, and quantity is sufficient for a rough quotation. For production orders, STEP or IGES 3D files are required. Our engineers will confirm interpretation before production.
A standard bracket has predictable geometry (angles are multiples of 90°, flat faces, standard profiles) that can be produced by bending or simple milling. An irregular connecting block has compound angles, asymmetric profiles, or multiple non-orthogonal interfaces that require 5-axis CNC machining from solid and custom fixturing.
Al 7075/6061: most common for robotics, UAV, and automation. 42CrMo4: for high-load drive system connecting blocks. SUS304/316L: food, medical, marine. Ti Grade 5: aerospace and weight-critical. PEEK / Delrin: cleanroom and chemically aggressive environments.
The first-article CMM program (measuring all critical interfaces and profile dimensions) is saved and re-run on every batch. This means every production part is verified against the same nominal geometry as the prototype — dimensional drift between batches is detected immediately.
Prototype (1–3 pcs, custom fixturing included): 7–10 days. Small batch (10–50 pcs): 10–16 days. Production (100+ pcs): 14–20 days. Fixturing design is amortised across the batch — no separate tooling fee.
