The broadest-spectrum chemical resistance of any machined alloy — Hastelloy C-276 resists both oxidising and reducing acids simultaneously by a synergistic Ni-Cr-Mo passive film mechanism. Nickel alloys work-harden extremely rapidly — cutting speed for Inconel 718 (aged) is 20–30 m/min vs 200–300 m/min for steel 4140. Feeds must be high enough to shear through the work-hardened layer below the tool; rubbing creates rapid tool edge dulling. Cutting parameters are managed per alloy grade and condition — aged 718 requires different parameters from annealed 625. Tooling cost per nickel alloy part is 5–10× higher than equivalent steel.

Inconel thermal conductivity ~10 W/m·K (vs 50 W/m·K steel) — heat at tool tip 5× worse than steel. High-pressure coolant 70–100 bar directed at cutting zone essential for tool life and dimensional accuracy. Without high-pressure coolant, thermal expansion of Inconel workpiece during machining can exceed part tolerance on long features.

Machine Then Age-Harden — IN718 Correct Sequence
Inconel 718 machined in solution-annealed condition (HRC 32–36), then age-hardened after machining to AMS 5662 properties (1380 MPa UTS). Machining after aging (HRC 40+) is 20–30% slower and dramatically increases tooling cost. Heat treatment distortion after aging is typically ≤0.05mm and is managed by allowance at DFM. We specify and execute the correct sequence — not machining fully aged IN718 bar stock.

Citric acid passivation restores the native Ni-Cr-Mo passive film on machined surfaces. Applied to all Inconel 625 and Hastelloy C-276 parts after machining. Standard for chemical plant and marine parts. Semiconductor grade passivation per fab-specific protocol available for vacuum chamber parts.

Not all chemical plant parts need C-276 — over-specifying adds unnecessary cost.

High-pressure coolant at 70–100 bar is not an upgrade option for nickel alloy machining — it is the baseline requirement for dimensional accuracy and tool life. We do not machine nickel alloys on flood-coolant machines where temperature control is inadequate.

Inconel 625 (ASTM B443/B564): corrosion + temperature to 980°C, annealed. Inconel 718 (AMS 5662): 1380 MPa aged, 700°C strength. Machine in anneal, age after. Hastelloy C-276 (ASTM B574): pH 0–14, HCl/H₂SO₄/Cl₂ resistant. C-22 (ASTM B575): mixed oxidising+reducing acid. Monel 400: marine, best Ni machinability. We advise on grade at DFM — most chemical plant requirements do not need C-276; many can use 625 at lower cost.
(1) Rapid work hardening — feed must cut through hardened layer; rubbing dulls tools instantly. (2) Low thermal conductivity ~10 W/m·K — heat at tool tip 5× worse than steel; 70+ bar coolant essential. (3) High cut strength — Inconel 718 aged HRC 40+ machined at 20–30 m/min vs 200–300 m/min for 4140 steel. Machining time is 10× longer; tooling 5–10× higher. This is why nickel alloy parts cost significantly more than steel — it is unavoidable physics, not supplier margin.
Inconel 625: annealed, no HT. Primary property = rezistența la coroziune (seawater, acids, oxidising environments to 980°C). Limited load capability above 650°C. Use for: chemical plant, marine, vacuum, semiconductor. Inconel 718: machined in anneal, then age-hardened to 1380 MPa after machining. Primary property = high-temperature mechanical strength (maintains 900 MPa yield to 650°C). Use for: turbine components, aerospace, high-temp fasteners. Rule: need corrosion resistance → use 625. Need high-temp strength → use 718.
MOQ: 1 piesă. Lead times: simple turned/milled parts: 10–15 working days. Complex 5-axis parts: 14–21 working days. IN718 with age-hardening: add 5–7 working days for HT. Material costs: nickel alloys are 8–15× higher than SS316L by weight. Machining is 5–10× slower than steel. These costs are unavoidable — nickel alloys are only specified when required. ASTM B443/B574/AMS 5662 material certificates available for all grades.
